* CGS 6001 What is Critical Global Studies? (3 credits)
This course is required for all MA students in the Critical Global Studies Graduate Program. In addition, all Critical Global Studies Ph.D. students who have not yet taken it must complete this course. Critical Global Studies is not simply a world-wide version of Area Studies. Rather, it examines globalization and its effects from below. This course provides a broad and transdisciplinary view of foundational ideas, issues, problems, and methodologies in critical global studies, and may be team-taught. This required course will be offered every Spring semester.
* CGS 6002 Literary and Critical Theories (3 credits)
This course introduces contemporary literary and critical theories that will help students develop critical thinking and address impending social, cultural, political, and/or environmental issues. Students will examine major contemporary theories such as ecocriticism, animal studies, and new materialism.
* CGS 6003 Global Minor Literature (3 credits)
Loosely adopting the Deleuzian concept of “minor literature,” this seminar examines literary genres, authors and regions that are commonly excluded from “world literature” canons. Readings include a broad range of literary works from different regions, social classes, genders and languages. This seminar attempts to envision global literature from an alternative perspective by focusing on non-Western, migratory, queer, non-anthropocentric literature as well as unconventional genres such as oral literature.
* CGS 6004 Transnationalism and Literature (3 credits)
This course aims to contest the ways in which literary history is organized in terms of nations, areas, and regions, and to reconfigure literary history in a global context. Students will investigate the relationship and interaction between transnationalism and cosmopolitanism in literary history.
* CGS 6005 Critical Development Studies (3 credits)
This course challenges the conventional view that the content and logic of “development,” primarily defined in terms of technological progress, industrialization, and economic growth, are universal. The course will first review mainstream as well as alternative critical perspectives on development. It will then discuss a range of selected topics, providing students with a deeper understanding of development as a historically, socially, and politically constructed assemblage of discourse, knowledge, and practice.
* CGS 6006 Globalization and Cultural Politics (3 credits)
In this course, students read theories of global culture and critically analyze cultural aspects of globalization such as media, migration and global cities.
* CGS 6007 Globalization & Social Movements (3 credits)
This course examines the causes, processes, and consequences of globalization and how they affect and are affected by social movements. The course provides students with an opportunity to think critically about globalization and the problems it generates, as well as to explore the often-neglected role of social movements in shaping global politics and economies. Cases studied will include global justice movements, climate justice movements, alter-globalization movements, and other forms of transnational activism.
* CGS 6008 Global History: Theories and Approaches (3 credits)
This course introduces contemporary historiographies and critical theories that help students develop critical thinking and deal with transnational/global history, which has contributed to connecting different parts of the world. Students will examine major contemporary approaches to histories of migration and trade, empires and nation-states, religion and the environment, borderlands, ideas, and communication and war.
* CGS 6009 Critical Political Ecology: Global and Local (3 credits)
This course critically explores the ways in which modern society, politics, and economy have shaped and been shaped by the understanding, transformation, and utilization of the environment. The course first introduces students to the major theoretical debates in the fields of environmental humanities & social sciences about the socio-cultural embeddedness and political nature of the environment. Selected environmental issues are then examined, with particular emphasis on the multifaceted and multilayered entanglements between global/local power dynamics and socio-ecological relations.
* CGS 6010 Borders and Frontiers in Global and Transnational History (3 credits)
In this course, students examine the formation or construction of borderlands and frontiers in each region from the perspective of transnational/global history.
* CGS 6015 Socio-politics of the Past in a Global Context (3 credits)
Where history is the study of the past, heritage is the many ways the past is used in the present and is chosen for the future. This course aims to provide an introductory understanding of heritage and memory politics. By focusing on the relationship between heritage and memory, this course teaches students to critically discuss both the multiple values of heritage and also the (ab)use of heritage by different stakeholders’ memory conflicts. In addition, this course examines a variety of approaches to cooperative international heritage management, including those of UNESCO.
* CGS 6025 Topics in Visual Culture Theories (3 credits)
In this course, students examine visual culture theories through interdisciplinary exploration of major topics and study the field of contemporary visual culture.
* CGS 6027 Global Readings of Visual Cultures (3 credits)
In this course, students learn how to contextualize and analyze visual culture produced locally but marketed and consumed transnationally, and perform research on global structures interdisciplinary, intersectional, and global approaches to reading visual cultures.
CGS 6033 도시 인문학 (Urban Humanities) (3 credits)

This seminar interrogates the rapidly intensifying global problem of inequality, using an intersectional approach.
* CGS 6037 Global Constructions and Disruptions of Kinship (3 credits)
This seminar interrogates how global movements of peoples, borders, politics, labor, and cultural power affect conceptualizations of family and disrupt kinship relations. Topics examined can include, but will not be limited to: immigration, exile, expat communities, transnational and transracial adoption, migrant labor communities, refugee camps, diaspora, ethnic enclaves, marriage laws, welfare systems, and legal as well as cultural citizenship.

This course is a survey of 20th-Century American literature. Students will read major American texts, learn about the socio-historical context for each text, and explore diverse literary issues including modernism, postmodernism, and multiculturalism. By the end of the semester, students will have a broader knowledge of the 20th-Century American literature and a greater awareness of their own commitment as a critical reader of literature.

* CGS 6124 Victorian Literature and Cosmopolitanism (3 Credits)
This course examines the history and theory of cosmopolitanism and explores literary representations of world citizenship in Victorian literature. The course addresses recent debates within cosmopolitan studies between humanist and posthumanist responses to globalization, transnationalism, and internationalism and historicizes these debates within nineteenth-century literature and political philosophy.
* CGS 6125 Victorian Novel and Imperialism (3 Credits)
This course examines the relationship between popular forms of fiction (bildungsroman, industrial novel, realist novel, gothic novel, mystery novel, sensation novel, colonial novel, adventure novel) and the history, theory, and institutions of the British Empire during the Victorian period. The course addresses recent postcolonial and posthumanist approaches to the biopolitics and ecologies of empire.

In this course, students will compare different genealogies and methodologies of Chinese studies across Europe, North America, and Asia and also discuss its differences from overlapping academic disciplines such as cultural studies, history, literature and development studies.

This course explores new cinemas from Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, and mainland China. In addition to various genres of recent films, it focuses on Japanese films from the ’60s and ’70s, Hong Kong and Taiwanese films from the ’80s, mainland Chinese films from the ’90s, and Korean films from the 2000s and discusses their characteristics.

This course will review important case studies and theoretical perspectives in historical sociology as an essential method in Korean studies. Theorizing the applicability of a spatio-temporal middle ground neither universalist or individualist, the course investigates the contexxts in which Korea can be studied and theorized from a comparativist perspective.
* CGS 6252 Big Data Analysis in Korean Studies (3 Credits)
Extradordinary amounts of data are produced in Korea daily. Similarly, tremendous amounts of data are produced about Korea around the world. In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of big data analysis so that they can glean insights about Korea—its past, its present, and its future—from the large troves of data describing Korea. Topics covered in this course will include predictive analytics, cloud-based big data analysis, as well as the definition and analysis of problem spaces and data needs in Korean studies. Students will gain a knowledge of big data applications, the fundamentals of predictive analytics, and learn how to assess and apply appropriate principles, techniques, and theories to large-scale data related to Korea.
* CGS 6253 Programming for Applied Deep Learning (3 Credits)
This course introduces students to methods for building computer programs for deep neural networks. The course focuses on developing applications using a well-developed, open-source deep learning toolkit. Various issues related to deep learning will be investigated within the framework of Korean studies, and students will be expected to design several competitive projects in Korean studies.
* CGS 6254 Filming Korea: Korean Historians Behind the Camera (3 Credits)
Some critical historical junctures in Korean history have been captured on camera and recorded in films of different genres. This course traces decisive moments in Korean history, as well as scenes from the daily life of Koreans, by critically engaging with
Korean films as historical texts.
* CGS 6255 Advanced Humanistic and Social Inquiry in Korean Studies (3 Credits)
This course will probe the history and methods of sociological and humanistic endeavor with a special emphasis on the relationship between computational, sociological, and humanistic thought. Readings will be varied and include historical and methodological topics such as the philology and emergence of modern academic disciplines, the origins and fundamental methods of sociological investigation, the divide between the (social) sciences and the humanities, quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques,as well as emerging computational methods in the humanities and social sciences.
* CGS 6256 Theory and Practice of Korean Development (3 Credits)
This course aims to provide an overview of core debates around the notion and practice of development across the world, with a particular emphasis on Korea’s experience of development. This course touches upon major social theories that intervene in the making of the notion of development and identifies sets of social relations and issues that affect development practice. In so doing, we will look into the ways in which these theories, sets of social relations and issues shape and reshape our development experience in Korea.
* CGS 6257 Development Studies Seminar (3 Credits)
This course reads literature addressing various major development issues discussed and debated in development studies, including governance, environment, migration, gender, ODA, NGOs and UN sustainable development goals (SDGs).
* CGS 6258 Korea in Globalization (3 Credits)
This course reviews economic, sociological, and political theories of globalization and assesses actually existing globalization processes that produce certain types of development with peculiar social, cultural, political, and ecological consequences. In doing so, it examines how these processes influence the world in general and South Korea in particular. Furthermore, we investigate the role of South Korea as a very active builder of global capitalism in these processes.
* CGS 6261 Research Methods for Applied Social Studies (3 Credits)
This course offers both theories and practical skills of research methods frequently used and discussed in social science. The course studies both quanitative and qualitative research methods and engages with debates regarding socio-scientific methodology and its relevance in understanding societal development.
* CGS 6263 Multiculturalism and Korean Society (3 Credits)
This course aims to provide a balanced understanding of Korean society for students by presenting multiculturalism in Korea and Korean culture in the world in comparative perspective. While surveying the objective differences in multiculturalism in global society and investigating related theory, the course will survey multicultural differences and debates in contemporary Korean society and if it is possible to consider Korea s unique characteristic its "singular" people.

This course aims to allow students to investigate social economy as it is actively debated around the world, as well as research Korean social experience. It will investigate theory concerning whether social economy is a new alternative or an ongoing supplement to existing systems, as well as broadly investigate social experience and ongoing debates in contemporary Korean society. Through this, students will be able to formulate research topics related the experiences of Koreas social economy in the world and how it has been influenced as well as how Korean social economy influences the world.

다양한 문화 속에서 여성과 남성의 역할을 민족지(ethnographic data) 강독과 비디오 자료 등을 통하여 살펴본다. 이 과정에서 젠더 문제의 보편성과 문화적 특수성을 분석적으로 제시한다.
CGS 6286 여성과예술 (Women and Arts) (3 Credits)
기존 시각예술의 남성 중심적 독해 방식 및 역사기술에 비판적으로 개입하고 여성주의적 관점에서 회화, 사진, 영화 등 동시대 시각예술의 사회적 의미에 대한 비판적 이해를 도모한다. 여성주의 비평 및 이론적 논의들을 검토하고 여성작가들의 여성주의적 실천 작업을 살펴본다.
CGS 6291 인종·종족·이주 (Race·Ethnicity·Migration) (3 Credits)
이주의 시대에 인종과 종족의 중요성이 중대하고 (신)인종주의가 문제가 되고 있다. 이 과목은 서구와 아시아에 대한 비교 연구를 통해 인종과 종족에 대한 비판적 사고와 분석의 역량을 기르고, (탈)식민지와, 종교, 문화 등이 어떻게 인종화되고 불평등과 차별의 기제가 되는지 탐구한다.
CGS 6293 국제이주의 사회학 (Sociology of International Migration) (3 Credits)
현대는 이주의 시대라 불릴 정도로 국제이주는 세계화의 한 축이 되었으며, 국제이주는 민족국가 단위를 넘어서는 초국가주의(transnationalism) 연구의 중요한 영역이 되고 있다. 이 과목은 이주의 원인과 이주민이 유입국에 통합되는 역학을 미국과 유럽, 동아시아의 경험을 사례로 비교 연구할 것이다. 이러한 비교연구를 바탕으로 이 과목은 국가, 국적/시민권, 민족적 정체성에 관한 새로운 시각을 갖추어 이 분야 연구의 기초를 놓는 것을 목표로 한다.
CGS 6295 세계화와 시민권 (Globalization and Citizenship) (3 Credits)
세계화와 국제이주는 다문화, 다종족(multi-ethnic) 현상을 낳으며 전통적인 민족국가에 변형을 가져오고 있다. 이 과목은 미국, 유럽, 동아시아를 비교하며 다문화, 다종족(multi-ethnic)현상에 대한 이해와 사회적, 정치적 함의를 연구한다. 이를 통해서 민족적 정체성, 시민권과 시민사회, 공존과 사회통합의 문제 등을 탐색한다.

In this course, students will investigate the textual record of early twentieth-century Korea while learning the basics of bibliography. Students will gain the ability to read the myriad stories that Korea’s books as material artifacts tell about cultural life during Korea’s turbulent twentieth century.

CGS 6316 전지구사 관점에서 본 북한사 (North Korean History in a Global Context) (3학점)
본 수업에서는 북한을 학문적으로 연구하기 위한 기본지식을 쌓고 북한 연구사의 주요 논쟁 및 기존 연구 성과 분석을 통해 북한연구에서 경합하는 인식론적 문제, 연구방법의 문제까지 포괄적으로 살펴본다. 수업 초반에는 북한사 연구에 기여한 주요 저작들을 읽으며 북한사회를 역사적으로 이해하는 데 방점을 두고 중반 이후부터는 방법론 논쟁과 주제별 연구 검토, 최근 연구 리뷰를 함께 진행한다.
